Write useful alt text for a Pinterest product Pin

Describe the product feature that the Pin image communicates without repeating its title.

Illustrated Frenzlab cover for Write useful alt text for a Pinterest product Pin

A product image can answer questions about shape, material, color, and use that a title does not.

The problem behind the post

A shopper may already know the product name from the Pin title. The image often adds information: the scale in a room, the texture of a material, or a feature visible from a particular angle. An alt description should carry the most important visual information while the Pin description explains benefits and links to the full product page.

A practical way to handle it

Look at the image and identify the decision a person might make from it. Is the close-up showing a clasp, a fabric weave, or how the item fits? Draft the main subject and that detail in the Alt Text Workshop. If multiple products appear, clarify which one the Pin promotes. Avoid subjective claims such as “luxurious” unless the visible evidence is described concretely.

Check the product page against the Pin. The color, size, and included items should match. If the photo contains important text, include it in the alt description or the Pin's accessible text. A description does not need to narrate every prop used for styling. Focus on the information that helps someone understand the product.

Three steps for write useful alt text for a pinterest product pin

A worked example

A Pin shows a canvas tote bag hanging on a door handle with a notebook inside. Useful alt text could say, “Natural canvas tote with a wide shoulder strap; a standard notebook fits inside the open top.” The title might already say “Canvas tote bag.” The alt text adds scale and design details.

Before you publish

  • Does the alt text add information beyond the title?
  • Does the product page match what is pictured?
  • Are essential words in the image available as text?

A common mistake

Do not describe an unshown feature as though it is visible. If the product is waterproof, that claim belongs in the description or product details with evidence, not in alt text for a static studio photo.
